Royal Gems

Get ready to raid the royal treasure room on the slot from Red Tiger Gaming. With a Tetris-like appearance, Royal Gems comes with an 8×8 grid, cluster pays, respins with locked clusters and symbol upgrades that can lead to wins of up to 3,000 times your bet.

Slot Details

Royal Gems is an 8×8 grid slot with cluster pays. Wins are awarded when minimum five matching symbols land connected horizontally or vertically. Enter the royal treasure room on desktop or mobile from 0.20 to 20 credits per spin. The medium variance game comes with an RTP of 96%.

What looks like a medieval room of a royal castle is the background to a gold and crown-ornamented square game window. Piles of golden coins and gems in various colours are scattered throughout the room, ready for you to win on the frameless reels. The scenery changes instantly to a night setting the soon you hit a win. A triumphant soundtrack is keeping things lively while you stack up the symbols.

The pay symbols start at the low end with the card suits -hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades, paying 50x your bet for a full screen cluster of 64 symbols. They are followed by a range of gems in different colours and geometrical shapes – green, blue, purple, red and gold. Hit a 64-symbol cluster to win 100x to 1,500x your bet. Mind you, getting a full screen of matching symbols will actually multiply the win by x2, hence, you can double those numbers.

There are no wilds, nor scatters on Royal Gems as it does not have a bonus round but a golden crown which will upgrade any winning clusters currently in view.

Royal Gems Slot Features

There is no need to go through the paytable in search of bonus games or free spins descriptions as there aren’t any. Instead, Red Tiger Gaming included cluster pays, respins, mega symbols and crown upgrades to provide the royal entertainment on the reels.

The cluster pay mechanic is not new but neither has it been used very often. Wins on Royal Gems are paid for clusters of minimum five matching symbols anywhere on the screen. They can be connected horizontally or vertically but not diagonally.

The second part of the pay mechanic comes into play the soon you hit a win. Any winning clusters will be locked in place and a respin awarded. This continues as long as the clusters keep growing on a respin. Wins are paid after every respin, however, they are not free. Each respin will deduct your bet from the balance and add then any potential wins. There won’t be a final pay once the respin sequence ends.

There are a few twists that can have quite an impact on your wins. First, all symbols including the crown symbol can appear in a single size or as mega symbols of sizes 2×2, 3×3 and 6×6. The second twist is the crown upgrade. Whenever a crown symbol lands, it will upgrade all winning clusters in view to the next higher pay symbols. One upgrade is awarded for each crown. For example, landing a 2×2 sized crown symbol will perform four upgrades.

And that’s not the end yet. Hit a full screen of locked clusters and your win will be doubled. These can be multiple clusters of different pay symbols or just one big cluster of a single symbol. Scoring a full screen of the top-paying golden gem will award the maximum win of 3,000 times your bet.

Final Verdict

Royal Gems is most certainly not your usual slot machine and reminded me of social media games that have been very popular with millennials. Maybe Red Tiger thought of capitalizing on that potential as the same audience can now play a similar game for real money. Either way, the slot is not spectacular and won’t have hardcore slotting enthusiasts lining up to have a spin but it comes with decent win potential and some interesting albeit repetitive twists.
