Narcos

Atención mi amigo! The much awaited Narcos slot will be hitting the casino lobbies hard and fast. In association with Gaumont, NetEnt is bringing the story of Pablo Escobar, one of the most powerful drug lords of all time, to a set of slot reels. Set in the 1970s and 80s, this branded game will take you on a dark but gripping journey of the notorious Colombian drug kingpin in his encounters with law enforcement.

Based on the Netflix hit series, the Narcos slot is a feature-rich game with Walking Wilds, one random feature, one bonus game as well as a free spins round that can lead to wins in excess of 5,000 times your bet.

Slot Details

Narcos is a video slot with five reels, three rows, and 243 ways to win. Pays are awarded for adjacent symbols from left to right only. You can be part of the Pablo Escobar journey on desktop, mobile and tablet from 0.20 to 400 credits per spin. As to be expected, the slot is highly volatile with an RTP of 96.23%.

Graphics and Visuals

Set in a typical Colombian town from the late 1970s with the city centre visible in a distance, the frameless game window is dominated by characters from the Narcos series. Netent went to great length to integrate an authentic storyline from the series. The random drive-by shooters, the nightclub shoot-out and the revolver barrel as a spin button are some of the highlights. Guns, grenades and stashes of cash are spread among the low-value symbols. A catchy salsa soundtrack will have you swinging through your session, although it will get dramatically interrupted when the features hit.

Pay Symbols

Open the game to find at the low end the card royals from J through to A, paying 2x to 3x your bet for a single five of a kind. A propeller aeroplane and a flamingo are on the medium level with wins for a 5OAK increasing to 6x your stake. The premium symbols are four characters from the series – Pablo’s bodyguard Pacho Herrera, his girlfriend Valeria Vélez, police detective Steve Murphy and DEA agent Javier Pena. Hit five across the reels to win 12.5 to 15x the bet.

A DEA officer badge is the wild symbol, performing the usual substitution duties. A getaway car marked with free spins is the scatter symbol.  There also a few special bonus symbols such as a Pablo wanted poster that will trigger the Locked-Up feature and a golden briefcase as the Golden Locked-Up symbol that will appear only during the bonus game.

Walking Wilds Respins

The first and most frequent feature on the Narcos slot is the Walking Wild as known from other Netent slots such as Halloween Jack. Any wild landing in a winning combo on a spin in the base game and free spins will turn into Walking Wilds and start a series of respins. They will move by one reel to the left on every respin until disappearing from the screen. Wins are evaluated after each shift. The re-spins end when there are no more wilds in a winning combo on the screen.

The Random Drive-By Feature

Watch out as a car with gang members can pull up at any moment in the base game. They will start shooting at the reels, transforming a random number of high-value symbols into wild symbols. Any transformed wilds which are part of a winning combination will become a walking wild. Don’t expect super mega wins on each occasion, but medium sized wins should happen pretty frequently.

The Locked-Up Bonus Game

Hit three Pablo Escobar Locked-Up symbols in one row on a spin to trigger the bonus game with initially three spins. The three symbols are moved together on their row to form a cluster and a random coin win of 1x to 10x the bet for each is awarded. They will be locked in place for the duration of the feature.

Only Locked-Up and Golden Locked-Up (the golden briefcase) symbols appear during the feature with the aim to have more land before you run out of spins. Any landing horizontally or vertically connected to a winning cluster or creating a new winning cluster will lock in place as well and award another random coin win as well as reset the spin counter to three. All other landing will become sticky too but will not award a coin win unless they get connected to a cluster before the end of the feature. Plus, a Golden Locked Up symbol can reveal one of the following extras:

  • Multiplier: All locked symbol values are multiplied by either x2 or x3
  • Upgrade Bonus Symbols: The coin wins on all Locked-Up symbols that are connected to the Golden Locked-Up symbol are increased by x1 the total bet. The upgrade can happen up to 15 times in one sequence.
  • Big Starting Value: An additional coin win between 11x and 26x the bet is added to the Golden Locked-Up symbols

The bonus game continues until you run out of spins or the entire screen is filled with bonus symbols. All coin wins are added and paid in addition to any potential wins from the triggering spin. If a Walking Wild was on the reels, the game continues with the Walking Wild moving one reel to the left.

The Narcos Free Spins Feature

Hit scatters on reel one, three and five in one spin to trigger 10 free spins which cannot be retriggered. The scenery changes to a night setting with a shoot-out between the police and the gang members. Similar to the Drive-By feature, they will shoot at the high-value symbol that land on a free spin and any that are hit will turn into a wild symbol. If they are part of a winning combo they will become a Walking Wild. The standard Walking Wilds are also active during the free spins.

If by the time the free spin counter reaches zero and there are still Walking Wilds on screen, then the game will award extra spins until they all disappear from the reels.

Final Verdict

There’s no rest for the wicked on the Narcos slot. Netent crammed a whole flurry of features into the game, in fact so much that I had to read the game sheet a few times to understand it all. So, be patient when you start spinning on it and let the features play out a few times as it becomes all clear and easy very quickly. The win potential is somewhat muddied but I venture to say that it is around the 5,000x bet mark. According to the game specifications, a single spin in the free spins can lead to a win of 1,506x your stake, hence, my number should be in the ballpark.
