Village People, the epitome of disco music in the late 1970s has found a revival on the slot by Fortune Factory Studios and powered by Microgaming. Flamboyant costumes, hilarious antics on and off the stage and catchy tunes such as In the Navy, Y.M.C.A. or Macho Man were the trademarks of the iconic US band.
Announced in a lavish show at the ICE 2019 in London, fans of Microgaming as well as the Village People members themselves were looking forward to a slot that would do justice to the popularity of the band. And in part, the creative team succeeded as they designed it with sufficient reels to provide one for each of the six members and placed a jukebox next to the game window that will replay the greatest hits of the Village People.
The question comes up, did the authentic design and hot music rub off on the gameplay and win potential? Microgaming is in dire need of another blockbuster slot that elevates the veteran game provider back to the top of the pile where it used to be at the turn of the century. Well, we’ll take the lid off at the start of the review. It’s not all bad but neither spectacular. Expanding VP wilds and six, yes six, free spins features will try their best to keep you swinging to the disco music and spinning the reels.
Village People Macho Moves is a video slot with five reels, three rows and 15 fixed pay lines. You can try your best moves on desktop, mobile or table from 0.20 to 25 credits per spin. While the game comes with medium volatility, we did not receive confirmation on the exact RTP percentage.
A typical 70s disco dancefloor with spotlights and jukebox serve as the background to the frameless reel set. The six members in their stage costumes and designed in a humoristic cartoon style stand on top of the game window, each with a meter that will trigger the bonus feature. The best Village People hits will be blaring from the jukebox while you are spinning the reels.
Open the game to find the card suits – hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds – at the low end of the pay table. They are followed by sunglasses, dancing shoes, vinyls, microphones and all but forgotten 8-track cassettes at the high level, each paying six times your bet for a six of a kind. A standard wild that could be mistaken for a disco ball will substitute for all symbols bar VP wilds. There are no scatters on this slot as the features are triggered by collecting sufficient expanding VP wilds.
All bonus features on the slot are centred around the special VP wilds. Two things will happen when they land on a reel. First, they will expand to cover the entire reel to create more winning chances. Hit them on all six reels to get a full screen of wilds and win a whopping, hold on, 90x your stake. Don’t fall off your chair.
The second part is more interesting. Each member stands on a pedestal with a meter. Any time a VP wilds lands on a reel it illuminates one light on the meter of the member on the same reel. Collect five VP wilds for one character to trigger five free spins which cannot be retriggered. Each member will award a different modifier in their bonus rounds.
Is it just me who feels that the slots from Microgaming seem to get worse with every release? Only they know what their long-term strategy is, although they might not need one if they continue with such mediocre releases. Village People Macho Moves is after the pointless Lara Croft Temples and Tombs yet another missed opportunity to create once again something spectacular.
