It has finally arrived. After one year of rumours and leaked snippets, GiG Games presented in October 2018 their first ever video slot creation. A wave of melancholy and memories from the good old days will swipe through living rooms when people load Wild Reels for the first time. The team at GiG Games opted for a classic slot with a modern twist that has a win potential of up to 500 times the stake in a single spin.
A disco ball towers over a frameless game window with five reels, three rows and 10 fixed pay lines. More spot lights on each side of the reels emphasize the classic theme of a 70s disco dance floor. Every winning combination is accompanied by its own light show. A catchy soundtrack typical of that era is only interrupted by the usual reel noises and win sounds.
GiG Games has given their first slot creation a generous RTP of 97%. Combined with the relatively low maximum win potential in a single round, puts Wild Reels into the low volatility category. It was probably intended to stick to that end of the variance scale for their first creation and maybe we will see something more volatile in the future.
Entry to the dance floor on the disco slot starts at 0.10 credits per spin and peaks at a modest 10 credits. A total of 10 pay symbols populate the reels together with one scatters symbol. At the low end, they can appear stacked and are the J to A royals. They are followed on the high level with cherries, bells, sevens, bars and stars. The wild symbol is a golden vinyl record while the scatter appears in the form of a smaller disco ball with the words ‘free spins’ across it. Pays for a single five-of-a-kind range from 2 to 50 times the stake. Scatters do not award coin wins.
The main feature in the base game is the wild reel. On every spin, one or occasionally two reels will turn wild to provide more potential to score a win. Three or four scatters anywhere on the reels in one spin will award eight and 15 free spins respectively. During the bonus round, two or sometimes three reels will transform into a wild reel, increasing the possibility to hit winning combinations. Having three reels wild from the left will automatically lead to wins on all 10 pay lines.
Is Wild Reels a hit or a miss? Considering, that it is the first release from GiG Games, we can overlook the simplicity and lack of extra features. The slot is otherwise well-designed with sharp graphics and smooth gameplay. The rather low maximum win potential probably won’t attract the hardcore slot players, but the game seems destined to be good for bonus wagering.
